CKHT Public Sabbat Ritual Etiquette: What You Should Know

The Sabbat Ritual Crew of the Cabot Kent Hermetic Temple, as called CKHT for short, would like to welcome you to our in-person Sabbat Ritual events! We are so pleased to have you as an attendee. We realize that whether you are a degreed Cabot Witch, a Current Temple Member, or a guest, you may have questions on protocol or etiquette. Let us define a few terms in simple terms that you will hear more often as you join us, keeping in mind that these definitions are very basic.

Sabbats: We observe eight ritual events, also known as Sabbats, throughout the year. Each Sabbat event holds an array of color, lore, symbolism, decor, ritual workings, and community activities. All of our public sabbat events are held at the Portuguese American War Vet Hall, located at 103 Tremont Street, Peabody, MA 01960. Visit our website for the exact dates and times.

A Degreed Cabot Witch: This title refers to an individual who took and passed Rev. Mother Laurie Cabot HPs’ Witchcraft I: Witchcraft as a Science course (WCI) or the following courses. After WCI are Witchcraft II: As an Art, Pre-3 Learning Programming (a pre-requisite to Witchcraft III), and Witchcraft III: As a Religion. You might hear people refer to themselves as a “2nd degree”, which denotes their passing of Witchcraft II (WCII); they may refer to themselves as a “Priest”, a “Priestess”, or a “Priestx”. Titles of “High Priestess”, “High Priestx”, “HIgh Priest”, “Reverend”, or “Elder” are reserved for those who move on above the courses into Initiation, Ordination, Elderhood.

Current Temple Member: A person who is registered on our website and is up to date on their yearly membership dues. Because of this, they are entitled to a Sabbat Ritual discount. $30 per entry for Members, $35 per entry for Non-Members. Free entry for Active Duty with a Military ID. An additional $5 off will be applied to the entry for Retired Veterans with a DD-214 form. Online tickets are $10 for everyone.

Guest: A person who is in attendance with no formal affiliation with the CKHT.

Sabbat Ritual Crew: This team oversees all eight sabbats, comprising the various types of affiliates listed above. They are both behind the scenes, planning, preparing, breaking down, and operating the various aspects of our Sabbat Ritual Event during each Sabbat. Each member of this crew holds a duty, overlapping tasks, and support. At the time, our Sabbat Ritual Crew is closed to newcomers. Leading the way are our Event Coordinators, our Ritual Coordinator, and our Tech Support.

Event Coordinators: These individuals are responsible for arranging dates, decor, crew communication, event community needs, and donations (like Monetary, Raffle Items, and potluck items), which are handled by Elder Penny Cabot HPx, Elder Bree Bella HPs, and Priest Kevin Inman. They can be reached at events (a) ckht.org for questions and concerns regarding Sabbat Ritual Events.

Ritual Coordinator: Drafting, proofing, or approving of the written CKHT public sabbat rituals, be they newly written or redrafted, and placement falls under Rev. Jacq Civitarese, HPs. If you would like to request a future part in the ritual, please contact Rev. Jacq at jacq (a) ckht.org, keeping in mind that there is no guarantee you will be placed in our public circle. Many of the majick positions are reserved for our Elders, Reverends, High Priestesses, High Priestxes, High Priests, and current Pre-3 or WCIII class Students. Only WCII Priestesses, Priestxes, Priests, and above are permitted in our inner circle, with few exceptions.

Tech Support: This team provides website support, live stream support, camera operation assistance, and damage control services. High Priest Andrew Baker, Priest Philip Boltas, and Priest Kevin assist with alerts, email responses, and other technical support for online attendees. You can reach HP Andrew at andrew (a) ckht.org for any questions regarding your online ticket or online attendance.

We are always looking for Majickal Raffle Items to be donated, as well as food for our Potluck Buffet. We value any community service or donations you can make! Please contact our ritual coordinators at events (a) ckht.org if you would like to help with any of these ritual needs. When donating food, please note that we require all food to be accompanied by an index card listing all ingredients, as some individuals may have food allergies. If you are donating a raffle item, please ensure the item is clean and in good condition.

For Setup, Take-down, Magickal Raffle Items, and Food for the Potluck Buffet, please contact our Event Coordinators at events (a) ckht.org. Please be mindful of your commitments.

Our Etiquette Guidelines

~ Be mindful of our Cabot Code of Ethics the entire time you are with your fellow witches and guests. We consider all the time spent with each other at Sabbats sacred.

~ Remember, these rituals are open to the public! See Something, Say Something! Be mindful of your personal belongings, such as your purse, phone, and keys. The Cabot Kent Hermetic Temple and the Portuguese American War Vet Hall are NOT responsible for lost or stolen items. Please report missing/lost items to Elder Bree HPs. Inform your guest.

~ Only those who are part of the ritual and the ritual setup are permitted in the Hall before the doors open at 5 pm. Please plan your time accordingly.

~ Please note that there is no assigned seating at any of our rituals. There are tables marked “Reserved” for Temple Elders only. We always have more than enough tables to seat all our guests, but with no guarantee with whom.  If you plan on attending with 5 or more as a party, we suggest you email the events team at events (a) ckht.org

~ Please approach Elder Penny HPx BEFORE you or your guest approach Reverend Mother Laurie Cabot HPs at ritual. Although Laurie is in good health, she is still over 90 years old, and the common cold can be a serious illness for anyone of that age. Penny has the right to protect their mother and will do so at their discretion. The same goes for taking pictures of Laurie; ask beforehand.

~  With the continuation of newer Cabot Witches attending rituals and inviting their guests, the question of what to wear has been asked a lot. If you are WCII and above with a robe, then you know to wear your robe from 5 pm till right before dinner. You should have all black clothing under including shoes and socks, per the requirements of Rev. Mother Laurie Cabot. This requirement is only untrue if your part in the ritual calls for another garment or if you have the Royal Stewart print on your garment. You represent the CKHT and should do your best to meet and greet all attendees. A guest might feel comfortable asking questions about our tradition by wearing your robe.

~ If possible, your guest should be asked not to wear street or overly casual clothing. Let them know that Sabbat should be treated as any other religious or ceremonial event. Please have your guest dress in seasonally semi-formal or all black/dark colors as another option. We take our Majick very seriously and hope your guests will, too. However, we will not refuse anyone due to their clothing type unless it is deemed offensive or threatening.

~ During the evening, all of our High Priestesses, High Priests, and robed Pre-3 or Third Degree Students are willing and able to answer any of your concerns and questions. Requests for Healing or Light Energy are also welcome. Although we might not be able to have a lengthy one-on-one with you, we will do our best to answer you and get back to you at a later time.

~ No one is permitted to touch the altar items unless instructed by the Reverends in charge of that Sabbat. Inform your guests.

~ Please reserve photos for before and after rituals. Never take pictures or videos during rituals. Inform your guests.

~ Once the ritual begins, please be respectful and silence your cell phone.

~ We ask that anyone in the INNER Circle of our Sabbats please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages until ritual work is finished. If you are asked last minute to be in the inner circle, and you’ve been drinking, please be honest and decline. There is no judgment here, just per order of the Rev. Mother Laurie Cabot. Please enter the INNER Circle with a clear mind, in the most correct and harmonious way.

~ Please stand in the Outer Circle if you are not in the Inner Circle. No one is permitted in the inner circle unless instructed by the Reverends in charge of that Sabbat, no matter what degree you hold. Please be mindful of the camera recording the ritual for Online participants in the North-East corner of the room. You may as well be asked to move in the Outer Circle to make space or for other reasons.

~ Please note that for us, Reverends, High Priestesses, and High Priests, to honor the tradition as Rev. Mother Laurie Cabot HPs sees it, we must address all incorrect actions and behavior. This might mean that one of us may privately advise you of our protocol, as this is a teaching tradition.

~ No one is permitted to share our written public ritual without permission from the Reverends in charge of that Sabbat.

~ Online attendees, the Tech team are regular participants in the ritual. We can not guarantee a response from the tech team regarding your online ticket between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM the day of ritual. All rituals are available to online ticket holders for 13 days after the Sabbat.

~ If you feel someone (ANYONE!) is causing you to feel unsafe, uncomfortable, disrespected, or abused in any way, PLEASE report to Elder Penny HPx immediately! If they are not present at the ritual, report to Rev. Jacq HPs or Elder Bree HPs. Our Sabbats are a Safe Place, and we hold the right to refuse anyone entry. Inform your guest(s) who may be attending with you.

~ All Witches and Guests must abide by the ritual etiquette detailed above. Any breaches of this etiquette, harmful or disruptive behavior, or other issues will result in you not being allowed to attend a CKHT ritual again. It may also result in removing your Temple membership or your degree status as a Cabot Witch.
